Skin Supporting Coffee Elixir
You all know I’ve been on the journey to healing my skin for quite some time and it really has been quite a bit of trial and error over the years to find what works best for me. The products we put on our bodies are incredibly important. Making sure they’re free of harmful, irritating ingredients is key, as is finding a consistent routine.
As a product junkie, finding the goodies I love and that work for me is always so much fun, but as many of you already know what we put in our bodies is just as important in healing our skin as what we put on our bodies. In most cases, what we put in our bodies is even more important in balancing our hormones, getting our gut health in check and lowering our stress levels.
For the last several months, since I’ve gotten settled into my Maryland-life routine, I’ve been making my morning coffee with healing my skin in mind. I’ve struggled with hormonal and stress-related acne for several years and through my own research have found several ingredients that help support my hormonal function and limit stress where possible.
As with anything, consistency is key and I’ve really noticed the changes in my skin over the last several months in part, I believe, due to this yummy concoction.
These six simple ingredients have helped support my skin health and limit breakouts. Here’s what you’ll need:
Collagen Powder - I use Vital Proteins! Collagen is great for so many things, but when it comes to your skin it improves elasticity and reduces wrinkles, which we all know will slow the signs of aging. Who doesn’t need that in their life, right?!?!
Maca Root Powder - Maca is an adaptogen and the list of benefits is SUPER long, but for me, I use it to help balance my hormones and ward against breakouts. It’s a powerful antioxidant, which helps the renewal of skin cells while stabilizing both your hormones (important when it’s your time of the month) and establishing balance throughout your body to avoid adrenal fatigue too.
Cinnamon - There are several benefits to using cinnamon topically, but there are also many medicinal benefits to eating cinnamon too. This holiday-time favorite helps to improve blood flow to the surface of the skin, which means more moisture and we all know more moisture means less aging. Cinnamon is also a powerful fighter against bacteria that can lead to acne.
Honey - High quality honey is rich in antioxidants, meaning it helps to cleanse the body of toxins. Less toxins in the body means fewer breakouts and clearer skin. Honey also helps to clear the digestive track and I’ve found that when my digestion is off I have more breakouts, unfortunately.
Almond Milk- Despite loving cheese, I avoid dairy as often as possible. Sadly, when eating dairy products I experience more breakouts, so I stick with almond milk as creamer for my coffee. I mix up the brands I use from time to time, but will always choose one that has limited added sugar.
Coffee - choose your favorite coffee on taste, brew strength. . . you name it! I will rotate through different local toasters to support the small businesses in my area.
I’m not a coffee wizard, so pulling this drink together is super simple!
Recipe:
1.5 Tablespoons collagen powder (Vital Proteins comes with one of those scooper things, I just use that)
1/4 Teaspoon maca root powder
Couple shakes of cinnamon
1 Teaspoon of honey (more if you’d like it sweeter)
As much or as little almond milk as you like :)
And I just use my Keurig to make the coffee.
Because of all the powder, I do like to blend mine up to avoid that gritty feeling. You can use a normal blender, I use this handy dandy KitcheAide hand blender. An aggressive stir has also done the trick for me before when I’ve been on the road.
Of course, I prefer to enjoy my coffee slowly, but this recipe is so simple I make it when I’m getting ready to head out the door for work each morning too.
If you try this recipe, reach out and let me know what you think!
