DIY Boho Wedding Backdrop
From sketches to pins to crinkled up magazine pages in the bottom of my handbag, there were so many DIY projects, big and small, that came to life on our wedding day. Looking back, all of the love and energy we poured into these projects turned out to be one of the most rewarding aspects of our big day.
While creating my wedding Pinterest boards I fell in love with the look and feel of these arches. They have such a unique, boho feel and turned into one of my favorite projects. We ended up using them as the backdrop for the head table at our reception, but they could easily be a ceremony backdrop too!
Supplies:
- 5 pieces of sanded plywood (size: 23/32 in x 4 ft x 8 ft)
- circular saw
- string, pencil, push pin
- sander
- paint (we used 3 colors)
How To:
- Plan/design your backdrop layout. I just drew this out on a scratch piece of paper until it looked like what I had in mind.
- Draw the arc at the top of each piece of plywood. Attach a pencil to a string that's the length of the desired radius & on the other end attach the string to a push pin. Place it in the horizontal center of the plywood. To draw your arc, hold the pencil up straight (not at an angle) & slowly move it in a circular motion around the pin keeping the string pulled taut.
-Only do the above step once! When the arc is drawn perfectly, use your saw to carefully cut along your pencil line. This first arch is the template & it saves so much time!
-Trace your arcs on all sheets of plywood & use the saw to carefully cut your arches.
- Decide on heights. I eyeballed this mostly, but once we had five 8-foot tall arches we decided the height of each one & used the saw to cut off the bottom of the arch in order to get the right height. For the half arches we simply cut them in half vertically & did the same thing.
- After all cuts we sanded the arches to have a smooth surface for painting.
- Paint your arches. We did two coats of paint for our backdrop.
- Attach the arches together. Here's where you may need to come up with a creative solution at your wedding. We used hinges & screws to attach the arches to each other & zip tied them to the poles of our tent. You could totally build bases for the arches instead too.
Happy DIY-ing I hope this helps you build the wedding of your dreams too!
