Botany Bay Beach
Two weekends ago I took a mini road trip to Botany Bay on Edisto Island, South Carolina with my girl Amanda (If you're not following Amanda on Instagram, you should be! She shares the most exciting adventures! Check her out at @iamamandajoy ) and her husband Scott. It was eerie in the most magical way and totally worth the two and a half hour drive from Columbia. Good company and good music made for a breeze of a drive.
With over 3,000 acres of wildlife preserve, this corner of South Carolina has a rich history rooted in cotton plantations and the Civil War. There's a ton of great history in all of lowcountry, but Botany Bay is one of the most unique places I've visited in South Carolina simply because of the unusual landscape.
Not to worry, if history isn't your thing, the beachfront property of Botany Bay is fantastic, making for a nature lovers dream! Like I said, the landscape is so unusual that they call it a boneyard beach. Come to find out, after doing a little research, that it's the erosion that's been taking place for years that's continually pushed back the coastline, leaving dead trees scattered across the beach.
Kinda spooky, kinda stunning right?
Right at the entryway to the beach there's a toppled over tree whose roots have been made a mantle for all the seashells that've been found along the beach. It's a lovely sight and a sweet little reminder of just how much good is left in the world. That people from all over the country and the globe can come together to create something beautiful brings a smile to my face. It makes you just want to add to the phenomenon.
The seashell tree!
There is just one thing you have to be careful of though. . . be sure to time your trip carefully. Because of the erosion and the damage that's been caused by hurricanes and heavy storms recently, there's no beach starting three hours before high tide until two or three hours after high tide. Much more of the beachfront is under water as a result of Hurricanes Matthew an Irma. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. and found out there wouldn't be a beach to walk on until 1:30-2:00 p.m. (We just drove to Charleston for lunch and came back, but if you're in a hurry make sure you plan wisely.)
All in all, it was a great check off the South Carolina bucket list and I would definitely recommend Botany Bay to my fellow adventurers.
